Crested European Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis var. regalis 'Cristata')

12.00

The original find was collected by a street vendor during the Victorian fern craze. The dormant plant was sold to a nurseryman who then realized its potential and even refused a princely offer to buy it. E. J. Lowe, a well known Victorian fern grower and writer, exhibited a specimen of this fern fourteen feet in circumference at the Royal Horticultural Show for which he won first place as the best fern in the show. This is actually a percristate-percristate form as the pinnules as well as the pinnae and apex are well crested. Young plants are lightly forked at the tips and heavier cresting develops with age.
