The 3 to 6 pairs of pinnae on this species are somewhat ovate with slight auricles (wing-like appendages) on one or both basal sides. The tips of the serrate pinnae are attenuate tails with the terminal pinnae being cleft into two to three sharp segments. Although the fronds have an opaque patina the light green coloration makes the netted veining charmingly conspicuous. This Cyrtomium seems to prefer a fairly shaded area with evenly moist yet well aerated compost. Broken concrete rubble, crushed eggshell, or fireplace ashes help keep the soil basic for best results. I find many of the Cyrtomium species to be excellent companions for the calciophile (calcium loving)  hepaticas as well as small spring bulbs.
