This charming variation on the species is apparently an exchange of traits with another form known as S. kraussiana 'Aurea.' Hildegard Jackson found this choice form in a shipment of both selaginellas to her wholesale nursery, California Ferns. The trailing stems are vibrant green while the tips of the jointed nodes are bright gold. It makes an excellent shady-pond-side carpet, as well as a charming top-dressing for special potted specimen and terrarium denizens.
Kraus's Spikemoss will light up any moist shaded garden corner. This classic frond-like groundcover is dark green with golden tips. If kept evenly moist this accomodating creeper will form a graceful but benign groundcover for larger ferns and perennials.
