Fishtail Crested Male Fern (Dryopteris filix-mas 'Cristata Martindale')

Stock Note: we are currently out of 4” starts but a limited number of 5” plants are available for $10 each.

This fern is often placed near a fish pond in the English fern gardens I have visited enhancing the tail-like terminal tassels at the tips of the gently upcurving pinnae. It is very rarely grown for the trade but is certainly one of the most refined of the crested filix-mas cultivars.  It does have a habit of being fairly slow compared to other male ferns and tends to make clusters of small crowns which can be difficult to separate.
