Plumose California Hybrid Polypody (Polypodium calirhiza 'Sarah Lyman')

Note: We are currently out of 4" starts but 6" starts are available for $20 each.

This is a sterile plumose form of a California native polpody found by Dr. Lyman in the wild and named for his daughter. Polypodium calirhiza is the fertile hybrid of P. californicum with P. glycyrrhiza. This hybrid seems to have less down time in the summer than either of its parents. It is almost evergreen but does have a couple of months in mid summer where it gets weary and I cut it back to make way for the new growth. The growth habit is fairly upright with fronds rarely exceeding 10" making it an excellent choice for dry shady rock gardens or deciduous understory areas. Since this is a winter performer keep in mind using it where it cam be viewed from inside mixed in with drought tolerant summer companions. Many thanks to Santa Rosa Tropicals for making this very special polypody available for more gardeners.
