This southern hemisphere counterpart to our Eastern North American Royal Fern is physically very similar with its slender willowy habit, broad foliage, and brilliant red stipe and rachis.  These ferns are most impressive when placed in a moist location where they receive early morning or late afternoon sun, which helps to develop deep fuchsia to magenta coloration on the fiddleheads and stems.  We love watching these glow in the sunlight as they emerge every spring!  Compared to other Royal Ferns, it has a striking penchant to remain green throughout the winter.  Spore for this fern was supplied by John Mickel on my 1991 trip to New York Botanical Garden.
