Dyce's Holly Fern (Polystichum x dycei)

10.00

Named for and created by my mentor in the British Pteridological Society, Jimmy Dyce, this fern is a very handsome hybrid of P. proliferum and P. braunii.  Bridging the gap between holly ferns and  shield ferns, this is one of the largest and most vigorous cultivars in either group, reaching frond lengths of up to 4', although around 3' is more typical.  The fronds emerge in a wonderfully regular vase shape as soft green but harden off to a waxy, glossy dark green as the fronds mature.  Taking after P. proliferum, P. x dycei is capable of proliferating by producing bulbils on the frond tips which can then be rooted to produce more ferns!  A must-have for any woodland garden.
