Dwarf Maidenhair Fern or Little Lady Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum raddianum 'Microphyllum')
Dwarf Maidenhair Fern or Little Lady Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum raddianum 'Microphyllum')
This is very fine foliaged Maidenhair fern selected out of the species raddianum, with extremely dainty pinnules reminiscent of a fine mist of greenery. Its triangular shaped fronds are five to six times pinnate, with a plethora of segments often no larger than the head of a pin! During spore production, the sori are often larger than the end segments, resembling white rings at the termination of the lobe. New fronds emerge with a pale pink tinge when exposed to sufficient bright filtered light. Best grown in hanging baskets or elevated containers, as mature fronds tend to weigh themselves down with a pendulous, weeping habit. While it does prefer high humidity, good air circulation is particularly important and frequent misting is not recommended. Periodically removing spent fronds and watering from below rather than saturating the foliage is recommended to prevent this cultivar from frond rot, as the fine, lacy segments easily trap excessive moisture. Like so many sub-tropical maidenhair ferns, it prefers to be constantly lightly moist rather than overly saturated and need protection from freezing conditions.
