Dwarf Congested Shield Fern (Polystichum setiferum 'Congestum')
Dwarf Congested Shield Fern (Polystichum setiferum 'Congestum')
This dwarf form of P. setiferum reaches a maximum size of about 12". The densely compressed oblong-shaped pinnules of this compact soft shield fern show off against the layered papery brown chaff on the stipe and rachis reverse. The pinnae elaborations are suited to the whole and their apical complexity carves a valley down the frond center. The frond color is muted to a dusky grayish-green. Congestum forms tend to be somewhat brittle and should be kept away from traffic patterns.
