'Star Glow' Dwarf Sickle Fern (Pellaea falcata 'Star Glow')
'Star Glow' Dwarf Sickle Fern (Pellaea falcata 'Star Glow')
Synonyms/Also sold as: Originally described, named, and sold as Pellea falcata '‘Star Glow’, this fern was later patented under the the very similar moniker of Pellea ‘Glowstar’
The cultivar Pellea falcata ‘Star Glow’ is described as being a dwarfed form of its parent species, Pellea falcata, growing at approximately half the rate and achieving half the size. While P. falcata is noted to have satiny obovate pinnae, ‘Star Glow’ is supposed to have ovate pinnae that are serrate and substantially waxier and glossier, giving it a bright reflective sheen in the shade. FInally, while P. falcata tends to send up fronds directly from its creeping rhizome, ‘Star Glow’ tends to emanate from central caudices along its creeping rhizome, giving it a less randomized and more vase-like shape. With a maximum height of about 6-8”, this fern is a great choice for containers and shaded rockeries, or as a compact houseplant; take care not to over-water, as the reduced vigor and dwarf size make this fern a slow drinker!
