White Tip Spikemoss (Selaginella tamariscina)
White Tip Spikemoss (Selaginella tamariscina)
This showy spikemoss has dense, fan-like foliage that develops a distinctive creamy white finish on the tips, making a stunning contrast with the dark green, branching foliage structure. It has been used as a medicinal plant in some cultures, and the leaflets will curl up into balls when dried. The white coloration on the tips will be more intense if given ample indirect or filtered light as opposed to constant deep shade, but avoid too much direct sunlight as it may cause scorching.
Although it is widespread throughout temperate to sub-tropical Eastern Asia, we have found that it does not seem to spread as fast or be quite as cold tolerant as Selaginella kraussiana cultivars, and we recommend protecting it from frost or growing it as a terrarium or miniature fairy garden plant. It seems to prefer high humidity during the active growing season and requires only light moisture during periods of rest.
Frond Condition: Evergreen; may be Semi-Evergreen in marginal conditions.
Root Type: Decentralized, slowly creeping
Mature Size: 3-6” tall with a spread of up to 12”+
Origin: Japan, China, Korea, India, Taiwan, Thailand
Cultural Requirements: Filtered or Ample Indirect Light; Part Shade to Shade, Moist to Lightly Moist, prefers High Humidity, Protect From Frost
USDA Zones: in it’s native environment it spans the equivalent of Zones 6-9. However, we have found that it does not tolerate frost well and recommend Zones 8 (marginal, protect from frost and excessive winter moisture), Zone 9, Zone 10 and Zone 11 or as a Houseplant.
