Mairis's Maidenhair (Adiantum x mairisii)
Mairis's Maidenhair (Adiantum x mairisii)
This lovely Maidenhair Fern hybrid is an old cultivar thought to be a fertile hybrid cross between A. capillis-veneris and another, most likely sub-tropical, but as yet unidentified maidenhair species. While A. raddianum is a very likely culprit given their overlapping ranges, confirmation of the parentage has remained elusive. Interestingly, many Maidenhair hybrids end up being hardier and/or tend more toward being more semi-evergreen to evergreen than their respective parents. This particular hybrid is sterile, so while it may clump and increase in size, it will never reproduce through spore or self-sow. The pinnae are quite generously spaced compared to many other Maidenhair cultivars, which makes the black stems even more striking!
