Leatherleaf Fern (Rumohra adiantiformis)
Leatherleaf Fern (Rumohra adiantiformis)
As the common name suggests this fern has tough, waxy foliage that matures to a glossy dark green, although new fronds are quite soft and light green until they mature. The fronds, when bruised or handled, seem to emit an aromatic scent that is reminiscent of sweet hay with a hint of licorice. The fronds are highly sought after by florists as their waxy coating makes them last in cut arrangements far longer than most fern species, with a decorative life of 1-3 weeks! Although it will tolerate part sun, it prefers to receive dappled or filtered rather than direct sun exposure. Widely distributed throughout the sub-tropics, it prefers to stay evenly to lightly moist, although once plants are established they can be somewhat drought tolerant, especially in conditions with high humidity.
