Squirrel's Foot Fern (Davallia trichomanoides)
Squirrel's Foot Fern (Davallia trichomanoides)
Stock Note: Current specimens are in 6” (approximately quart size) pans
This Davallia species is one of the easiest, most low-maintenance houseplants around. Also known as the Black Rabbit’s Foot Fern, this fern grows and spreads from shallow-rooted rhizomes covered in white to gold fuzz. The lacy triangular fronds emerge on upright stipes along the length of the rhizome, rather than arching out from a central crown or caudex, so mature specimens can be quite lush and bushy. While the fronds typically stand up a foot and a half tall at maturtiy, the creeping rhizomes can spread a great distance laterally given enough time and space. In frost-free climates they can be planted outdoors and can achieve quite a spread. These also make excellent container or hanging basket plants as they do not mind being pot bound, and their adorably fuzzy rhizomes will grow to cascade down the sides of their container. They are more drought tolerant than other types of house-ferns, requiring less vigilant watering since they prefer to dry out in between waterings. We have found they can also be quite cold tolerant if kept dry and protected from the onset of frost when temperatures drop below freezing, and in many climates they can be overwintered in an unheated greenhouse, enclosed porch, shed or garage if need be!
Frond Condition: Evergreen
Mature Size: 12-18” tall. creeping rhizomes may spread up to several feet or form large clumps if planted in milder climates
